Wood Polymer Composites

Wood-Polymer Composites (WPC’s) are thermoplastic compounds containing wood fiber or wood flour typically in polymers such as PE, PP or PVC. The amount of wood in the composite can range from 30 - 70%, although 40 - 50% is more common. Wood-polymer composites can contain a variety of other additives such as coupling agents, process aids, antioxidants, mineral fillers, and pigments. The advantage of wood-polymer composites is they can be extruded and molded into products which project a wood look without the natural rot and high maintenance of real wood. Other advantages are that finished products such as decking and door trim can be cut and machined very similarly to standard wood boards.

MDI offers custom formulating of WPC's. We can provide loadings of PE based wood-polymer composites between 40 - 50%. These composites can be natural or custom colored.

MDI also offers color and additive concentrates for use in decking production or other WPC compounding.

WPC’s do require special processing considerations due to the high wood filler content and the tendency of the wood fiber to burn if exposed to high temperatures and shear. MDI’s technical team is very experienced in WPC processing and are able to suggest proper handling and process conditions for these types of compounds.
